Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone only signed a two year contract extension after asking for a guarantee that the club would sign Chelsea striker Diego Costa, reports the Mirror.

The Argentinian coach’s original contract was due to expire in the summer and before agreeing a new deal to remain with the Spanish club, he was given assurances from Atletico’s president and board of directors that Costa will be signed in the January transfer window.

No deal between Chelsea and the La Liga side materialised before deadline day, but Atletico were not in a rush to get a deal finalised as they can only register new players once their transfer ban is lifted in January.

Chelsea are believed to be only prepared to sell the 28 year old once he returns to the Cobham Training Centre, but the player has so far refused to return to the UK.

Spanish newspaper Marca had reported that the striker had arrived back in London but sources at the London club have told the Mirror that he has yet to return to the capital.
