Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal remain interested in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the Daily Telegraph, but they will have to wait until next summer to land the Dutch international.

The Saints refused to sell the 26 year old despite the centre back requesting a transfer, as well as releasing a statement, in order to force a move away from St Mary’s.

It is believed that van Dijk’s situation will not be addressed in the January transfer window but it may be reconsidered next summer. The centre half is reportedly valued at £60m by his club but it would not be a fee that would put off the Blues, or his other main suitors.

Reports suggested that the Dutchman had his heart set on a move to Liverpool this summer but the Reds withdrew their interest after accusations of tapping up from Southampton. The player is likely to have reconsidered his options by the time next summer comes around, giving other clubs the opportunity to sign the defender.
