The Daily Telegraph are reporting that Tottenham do have the option to extend defender Toby Alderweireld’s contract for a further twelve months, but it would also trigger a £25million release clause.
The Belgian international’s contract currently runs until 2019, but negotiations in recent months over a new deal have reportedly broken down. Both Chelsea and Manchester City are believed to be monitoring the player’s situation at Spurs.
The 28 year old’s agent Stijn Francis spoke out to the Belgian media a few days ago, hitting out at Spurs’s reluctance to offer a deal to the defender that reflects his contribution to the team.
The centre back is said to be on just £50,000 a week and with just two years left on his contract, Tottenham may have to consider selling the player next summer, or at least trigger their option to extend his contract by a further year so they can be guaranteed of some kind of transfer fee, even if it is just £25m.
