Atletico Madrid are preparing to bid £41m in order to land Chelsea striker Diego Costa, according to Evening Standard journalist Simon Johnson.

The Blues have been holding out for £50m but the La Liga side have so far only bid £26m to sign the 28 year old. The £15m increase in the offer will no doubt be seriously considered by Chelsea with only a few days left in the transfer window.

The Spaniard has made it publicly known that he wants to join Atletico, and the fact that the forward has one destination in mind has hampered negotiations, as the Blues are unable to count on interest from other clubs to force the Spanish team to meet their asking price.

Even if a move does go through before deadline day, Costa will not be able to play for Atletico until January because of the club’s transfer ban. Ligue One sides Monaco and Marseille and Premier League club Everton are all said to be interested in a six month loan deal for the striker.
