Chelsea are looking at signing former Newcastle and Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given on a free transfer, according to A Bola.

The 41 year old left Stoke City at the end of last season but has not retired despite his age. The reason for Chelsea’s interest in the former Irish international is because third choice stopper Eduardo has reportedly asked to leave the club.

The Sun have reported in the last few days that the 34 year old is concerned that his lack of game time will cost him a place at next summer’s World Cup.

The Portuguese international joined from Dinamo Zagreb in August last year, and only signed a new one year contract extension in May, but the subsequent arrival of Willy Caballero from Manchester City as the club’s second choice has prompted a rethink by Eduardo.

The goalkeeper has 36 caps for Portugal, but he has not made the squad since September last year when he started the 5-0 win against Gibraltar and made the bench for the 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.
