Chelsea are tracking Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, according to Transfermarketweb. The website reports the Frenchman is also attracting the interest of former club Villarreal, Napoli and Valencia.

The stopper was in and out of the PSG first team last season with the 24 year old having to compete with German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp for the number one jersey.

After initially starting the season on the substitutes bench, manager Unai Emery made him first choice from September to February before he lost his place to Trapp once again.

Chelsea’s interest in Areola is surprising considering they have already signed former Manchester City keeper Willy Caballero to become the club’s number two behind Thibaut Courtois. Their interest in the PSG player could be with more long term considerations in mind.

Courtois has two years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and has yet to agree a new deal. At 24, Areola still has room to develop and if he improves markedly over the next year or two, he could be on a long list of keepers who are being scouted just in case talks stall with the club’s current number one.
