Real Madrid are stepping up their chase of Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, according to Mega TV journalist Josep Pedrerol.

The presenter of TV programme El Chiringuito reported that the La Liga champions will target the Italian international this summer as they look to strengthen their backline.

The Evening Standard have also said that Chelsea remain interested in the 30 year old, along with his team mate Alex Sandro, but it seems Real will go head to head for the centre back.

The Spanish club currently only have three recognised senior centre backs with Pepe leaving the Bernabeu this summer. Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Nacho are the players currently available to Zidane in the centre of defence and there has been some talk of Jesús Vallejo, currently at the European Under 21 Championships with Spain, becoming the club’s fourth choice centre half.

If Pedrerol is to be believed though it seems the Champions League winners will make a move for Bonucci instead over the coming weeks.
