Chelsea target Kostas Manolas move to Zenit St Petersburg has reportedly hit the buffers because the player has failed to agree personal terms with the Russian club.

The Greek international was poised to make a €34m (£30m) switch to Zenit but after the 26 year old failed to turn up for a medical yesterday, it seems the move is in serious jeopardy.

The Gazzetta Dello Sport say Manolas is demanding to be paid in euros or dollars rather than Russian roubles due to currency depreciation. It is a strange request, considering the currency has begun to stabilise over the past year, but it seems the centre back wants to make sure he receives the €4m a year net he has been promised.

Zenit are believed to be unwilling to agree to to the defender’s request which has prompted speculation that Chelsea could come in with a last minute bid to land the Roma star. The Evening Standard report that the Blues are “exploring” a fresh move for Manolas but there doesn’t seem to be a bid imminent for the player.
