Antonio and Hector in: Conte’s dream Chelsea defence after the January transfer window

It looks set to be a very exciting few weeks to be a Chelsea fan…

Amidst all the attention surrounding Chelsea’s supposed pursuit of Fernando Llorente, it would appear as though a couple of Chelsea’s proposed pieces of business have gone under the radar over the last few days.

In a story that has come out of nowhere, the Times are reporting that Chelsea are keen on a wing-back rebuild – with Cologne left-back Jonas Hector and West Ham ace Michail Antonio supposedly on the radar of Antonio Conte.

The news came as a surprise, especially considering how well Chelsea’s defence is currently working, with the duo of Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses arguably Chelsea’s best performers so far this season. Antonio Conte has, clearly, got his own ideas, though, and given the start that he has made in the Premier League, the Chelsea faithful are going to have to trust their manager.

Should the duo come in, they will form a key part of an unstoppable Chelsea defence – with a mixture of experience and youth.

With that said, could this be Conte’s dream Chelsea defence after the January transfer window?

 LWB – Jonas Hector

Marcos Alonso has done well this year, but he has looked poor in places against some of the Premier League’s better teams.

Against the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal, Alonso struggled defensively, and so Conte could look towards someone with a bit more big match experience – and Jonas Hector could be that man.

A seasoned Germany international, Hector has impressed both internationally and domestically, and would surely be a hit in the Premier League.

He is solid defensively, but his real qualities shine going forward – making him a perfect candidate for Chelsea’s wing-back role.

 CB – Kurt Zouma

Kurt Zouma has only just returned from injury, but prior to his spell on the sidelines, he was a vital member of the Chelsea defence – and he must return to the back line sooner, rather than later.

He is pacey enough to work wonders in a 3-man central defensive trio, replacing the often inconsistent Gary Cahill in this side.

The French defender is also a natural leader, which would make him for Cahill’s absence at the back. He is still young, but he has it all.

 CB – David Luiz

David Luiz has looked shaky in parts this season, but overall, his signing has been an impressive one.

He is flamboyant and often tries too hard to impress, but at his core, he is a great defender – and Conte must continue to emphasise that going forward.

Like Zouma, he is a leader – and his influence on the field cannot be understated.

 CB – Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta is always consistent at the back, and Conte won’t be dropping him anytime soon.

Though a natural full-back, Azpilicueta seems to enjoy playing more centrally – and he is quickly emerging as quite the talent in the role, too.

A return to the flank could happen eventually, but for now, he needs to stick to the centre.

 RWB   – Michail Antonio

What a sensational move this would be. Michail Antonio’s rise to the Premier League has been remarkable, and if Conte has his way – he could go one step further.

Victor Moses has impressed on the right, but he is not going to be a long-term solution. Conte would be wise to bring in a back-up, and if Antonio can continue his fine form at Chelsea, he would surely displace Moses.

Attacking, quick and defensively solid – he has it all.
