According to Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, Chelsea are set to recall defender Nathan Ake from his loan spell at the Vitality Stadium…

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent (via BBC Sport), Howe revealed that the Blues are looking to recall the Dutch defender – seemingly as a result of his fine performances for the Cherries so far this season, and whilst Howe noted that the deal had not been completed, he indicated that it was almost certainly forthcoming.

Interestingly, ESPN reported on Saturday that the Blues were looking to get a deal decided and organised this weekend – and that is seemingly the path that the move is taking.

The deal, whilst certainly a shock, actually makes a lot of sense. Ake has performed fantastically for Bournemouth so far this season, despite not being a regular starter in the first team earlier in the season. Within a few months, he had forced himself into the side and he then went on a pretty impressive scoring record for a few weeks. Since then, he has stabilised his position in the starting XI – and has made himself a regular under Howe.

From Chelsea’s perspective, Conte has seemingly noted the Blues’ lack of depth at the back – with Marcos Alonso the only genuine option on the left-hand side. Ake is able to play centrally, on the flanks and even through the midfield – making him a great utility option for Conte.

Ake has featured for Chelsea before, and was often played by Rafa Benitez when the Spaniard took charge of the London side in 2012.

With a title challenge likely forthcoming, the Blues need all the strength they can get – and Ake would be a great option going forward.
