Hi Semedo: Chelsea’s potential new-look 2017 defence including €40m-rated star

It could be a very interesting last few days of the month for Chelsea…

The Blues might be flying in the Premier League, but it would appear as though Antonio Conte is far from building his dream squad at Stamford Bridge.

According to A Bola, Chelsea are keen on right-back Nelson Semedo, who is currently playing for Benfica. The impressive full-back has impressed in Portugal as of late, and Antonio Conte has, seemingly, taken note of his fine performances.

Victor Moses has done far better than anyone could have hoped this season, but the Nigerian is quite clearly a square peg in a round hole – and long-term, it seems unlikely that he will continue to man the right flank for the Blues.

Should Semedo make the move, he would certainly be joining a rather impressive back line. With that said, could this be Chelsea’s potential new-look 2017 defence including Semedo?

 LWB – Marcos Alonso

Marcos Alonso has looked shaky at points this season, but all in all, you can certainly consider his signing a success.

Signed from the Serie A, there were certainly a few question marks over his quality – but he has silenced the doubters over the last few weeks.

Offering an excellent offensive threat whilst also maintaining defensive stability, Alonso was one of Chelsea’s best signings of the summer.

 CB – David Luiz

Another summer signing, David Luiz has been impenetrable this season.

Playing as a sweeper, slightly behind his other defensive partners, Luiz has been tasked with managing loose balls and being the last line of defence – and he has done the job magnificently.

Nobody thought he would be a very good signing, and he has proved everyone wrong.

 CB – Kurt Zouma

Kurt Zouma will be back in the Chelsea team before long, and with good reason.

The Frenchman has been superb since he joined the Blues, and a long-term knee injury surely won’t stop him in his quest to dominate the Premier League.

He will likely take the rest of the season to increase his fitness and become a starter once again, but expect him to return soon.

 CB – Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta has always been consistent for Chelsea, but this year he has been even better.

Switched to a role in central defence, Azpilicueta has been unstoppable – as he proves once again that he can play wherever he is told to.

An expert right-back, left-back, and now defender – Azpilicueta is the complete package.

RWB – Nelson Semedo

Nelson Semedo is an exciting defender that would surely make an impact in the Premier League.

Victor Moses would be unlucky to lose his place, but Conte must look long-term.

He is particularly proficient going forward, but also retains a decent level of defensive stability.

€40 million is a lot of money, but he would be worth it.
