It’s time for Abramovich to try and sign these 2 defenders for Chelsea in January – agreed?

Chelsea are going well in the Premier League, but their defence has looked rather shaky at some points this season…

Antonio Conte has always been a manager that has focused upon defensive stability, and the improvement compared to last season has been absolutely remarkable.

Last year, the Blues were leaking goals left, right and centre – and Antonio Conte had a lot of work to do.

He has done a stellar job at improving the defensive line, as shown by Chelsea’s remarkable defensive record – but there is only so much that he can do.

There are a number of players in the Chelsea ranks that are, at this point, not good enough – and Conte would be wise to invest in a number of new defenders with the transfer window reopening in just a few days. His defenders have been fine in the short-term, but long-term – they’re only going to cause more problems.

With that said, It’s time for Abramovich to try and sign these 2 defenders for Chelsea in January – agreed?

 Virgil van Dijk

No defender in the Premier League has impressed more this season than Virgil van Dijk.

The Southampton centre-half has been the standout player in the Southampton first team, displaying fantastic aerial superiority and defensive stability in an otherwise pretty average Saints team.

Players like Gary Cahill and David Luiz have looked good in recent weeks, but they have been mistake-prone in recent years – and that is not something that Antonio Conte can stick with in the long-term.

If he wants consistency and Premier League experience – van Dijk is his man.

 Jose Gaya

The Chelsea defence does deserve some credit, though, and in general – they have done well.

The only player that has shown poor form in recent weeks is Marcos Alonso, who has looked a bit shaky against some of the bigger sides in the Premier League, and so Antonio Conte might want to look towards Jose Gaya as a back-up, should that continue.

He is a young, quick, Spanish defender – and he has impressed in La Liga as of late.

Chelsea have done well investing in young Spanish talent in recent years, most notably with Cesar Azpilicueta, and so Conte would be wise to look towards the youngster.
