3 reasons why Chelsea should not give Diego Costa a new contract – agreed?

The Mirror are reporting that Chelsea are looking to tie Diego Costa down to a new long-term deal…

Diego Costa has made a fine start to the 2016/17 season, and has firmly established himself as one of Antonio Conte’s most important players.

He currently sits atop the goalscoring chart in the Premier League – and Chelsea’s success this season appears likely to fall upon his shoulders.

All this, then, would likely suggest that a new deal for Costa is a good idea – but it isn’t so cut and dry.

Costa is, admittedly, a fine player – but he comes with so many caveats that all point towards 1 thing: now is not the time for a new deal.

With that said, here are 3 reasons why Chelsea should not give Diego Costa a new contract – agreed?

 Atletico Transfer Ban

If the Mirror are to be believed, Chelsea’s main motivations for giving Diego Costa a new deal surrounds supposed interest from Atletico Madrid.

In fact, the Mirror are suggesting that the Spanish giants have continually enquired about the availability of Costa since his arrival in London – and that, you would think, is a reasonable reason for Chelsea to want to cement his long-term future.

However, Atletico Madrid are currently on a 2-window transfer ban; and that means that at present, they are unable to buy any players.

That completely negates the argument to give him a new deal to end their interest. It would make much more sense to wait until their ban is close to expiry – and then Chelsea can reassess the situation.

 Attitude Problems

Much has been made about Diego Costa’s attitude – and at times, it does Chelsea more harm than good.

Of course, his determination and aggression has helped Chelsea on so many occasions – but in the long-run; how good is it for the Chelsea, really?

In truth, his poor reputation is beginning to reflect poorly on Chelsea – and for a club that is, essentially, a business – that is not a good thing.

The poor PR is not worth the goals.

 Contract Length

Diego Costa’s Chelsea contract expires in 2019 – which is still 3 years away.

There is absolutely no rush to tie Costa down to a new long-term contract when over half of his previous deal still remains – and it simply does not make financial sense.

You could understand Chelsea wanting to renew his deal amid Atletico interest if there was a risk of him leaving for a free – but that simply isn’t the case.

A new deal would inevitably mean a pay-rise – and that would make no sense.
