Antonio Conte has a lot to do to turn Chelsea back into title challengers…
After a dismal 2015/16 season, Antonio Conte was brought in to turn the ship around at Chelsea – but thus far the ship has mearly steadied somewhat.
Certainly, Conte has added a degree of stability and determination back to Chelsea’s first team squad – but he is still some way away from completing the process.
Up next for the Italian is a tough trip to reigning Premier League champions Leicester City – and the Blues will have to be on their game to get a result.
However, it is not all up to the players. Conte must ensure that his team and tactical selections are correct; or he could risk slipping to another defeat.
With that said, here are 3 things that Conte must do to ensure that Chelsea beat Leicester City this weekend…
Antonio Conte switched to a five-man defence against Hull City and it worked a treat. The Blues looked dominant throughout, and in the end, they cruised to a relatively simple victory against the Tigers.
Given Chelsea’s misfortunes so far this season, it was essential that Conte changed something; and his decision to utilise three central defenders and two wing-backs was definitely a fruitful one.
However, the Italian must now be brave and continue with that formula against Leicester. Four man defences are, of course, tried and tested in the Premier League – but Conte must stick to his methods and continue with the formation that proved so successful last weekend.
Having two natural full backs was a refreshing change of pace – and one that could prove vital against Leicester.
Cesc Fabregas has not been at his best this season, and he would readily admit that – but Antonio Conte must give him a chance against Leicester.
Nemanja Matic has not covered himself in glory, and Fabregas excelled against Leicester earlier this season in the EFL Cup – and you would expect him to pull out another top performance this weekend too.
Whenever he has played, bar the Arsenal game, he has looked impressive – and his combining with Diego Costa was what led Chelsea to the Premier League title 2 years ago
Many managers would not risk a player that has been training for less than a week, but John Terry must start if he is ready.
It is clear to see that Chelsea are a completely different side without their captain. Whatever he lacks in mobility he more than makes up for in his on-the-field presence. The Chelsea defence falls apart when he isn’t there – and against Leicester’s threatening attack – that simply cannot happen.
A five-man defence made up of Alonso, Cahill, Terry, Luiz and Azpilicueta could take on any attack in Europe.
Get it done, Antonio.
