According to the Mirror, Chelsea could be set to land Real Madrid defender Pepe at the end of the season.

The Portuguese defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, and after only being offered a 1-year-deal, the Mirror are reporting that Pepe’s representatives think that Chelsea could be the side to offer him the 2-year-deal that he desperately wants.

The potential move was definitely a surprise, and many have suggested that it would be a poor piece of business by the Blue.

However, we aren’t so sure. Pepe is a veteran defender, and he would have so much to offer the Chelsea first team. In fact – we think it could end up being one of the signings of the summer…

With that said, here are 3 reasons why Pepe would definitely be a great signing for Chelsea

Experience

There is no doubt about it, Pepe is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most experienced defenders.

With Real Madrid, he has won everything that there is to win, and you don’t do that well by not being a top player.

His achievements also stretch to international level, as seen over the summer – as the defender played a key role en route to Portugal’s Euro 2016 success.

At 33-years-old, Pepe is a defensive veteran – and he would add a dose of experience to Chelsea’s relatively young first team.

Cost Effective

This could be crucial for Antonio Conte.

Given Pepe’s pending contract expiry, his transfer would cost absolutely nothing. When the Blues are reportedly considering a world-record fee for a player like Leonardo Bonucci – in the context of the deal, Pepe would be an absolute bargain.

Further to that, given his age, Pepe would likely demand relatively small wages – freeing up further funds for alternative signings.

If Chelsea are looking for a cheap solution, Pepe would be perfect.

Defensive Departures

Whilst experience and financial value are important, what really matters is what happens on the pitch – and Pepe could be an absolutely essential purchase for Chelsea.

John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic’s contracts expire at the end of the season, whilst Gary Cahill’s form has been poor – leaving his long-term Chelsea future uncertain.

As a result, Chelsea could find themselves with 3 less defenders.

Pepe could be cheap and experienced – but most importantly he could be available. In a market where it is so hard to find good quality and available defenders – Pepe could be a shrewd signing.
