2 pros and 2 cons to Pedro starting for Chelsea against Southampton

Unexpectedly, Chelsea winger Pedro has finally found a bit of form in a Blue shirt…

Since the Spaniard’s big money move from Barcelona to Stamford Bridge, Pedro has largely failed to live up to the hype that followed his signing.

Largely resigned to the Chelsea bench, Pedro has been unable to get in front of the likes of Eden Hazard and Willian in the Chelsea first team, whom have both performed fantastically since his arrival.

However, against Man Utd – something changed. Pedro popped up with an impressive goal, and he was undoubtedly one of the Blues’ standout performers on the day.

With a clash against Southampton on the way, the question is: should the Spaniard keep his place – despite the return of both Oscar and Willian?

It’s definitely a tough call, so here are 2 pros and 2 cons to Pedro starting for Chelsea against Southampton…

 Pro – Man Utd Form

The most obvious pro.

Against Man Utd, Pedro was unplayable – and he popped up with a goal in the first minute that set the tone for the rest of the game.

He was switched on throughout the game, and performed fantastically both defensively and offensively.

Chelsea have often lacked his energy and explosivity in recent weeks – and against Man Utd, he showed that in droves.

 Con – Inconsistent Form

However, the only issue with that argument is that with Pedro – you never know how good he is going to be.

Often this season, he has been very disappointing. Man Utd wasn’t his first chance in the Chelsea first team – but it was the first time that he properly performed.

You can’t base how good he will perform based on one decent game, and Southampton is a must win game.

Don’t risk him, Antonio.

 Pro – Squad Rotation

Squad rotation saw Pedro enter the Chelsea first team last weekend – and it should also see him enter the first team against Southampton too.

Eden Hazard has played every game so far this season, whilst Willian and Oscar have only recently returned to training.

Playing Pedro, who is fully fit, could prove to be a masterstroke as it will allow Antonio Conte a further week to get his other attackers in good shape.

If Willian or Oscar are ready to play, though, Pedro could allow for Eden Hazard to have a weekend off.

 Con – Willian

Willian was Chelsea’s best player last season – and it would be a very big call from Antonio Conte to leave him on the bench considering how much of a game changer he can be.

His form this season, whilst not as good, has still been solid – and he would undoubtedly perform at his consistent best against the Saints.

It would be harsh to drop Pedro, of course – but when Willian is at his best, as he often is, he is absolutely unplayable.
