Thibaut Courtois has admitted that it has been hard to displace Petr Cech as Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper, but believes that benching the veteran is indicative of his own quality.

Cech, 33, is heavily expected to leave Stamford Bridge after 11 years of service this summer after falling behind Courtois in the pecking order last season.

The young Belgian, 23, admits that it is a “shame” to see such a stellar figure resigned to life on the Blues bench, but claims that he is happy with his own form.

“We work great together,” Courtois told L’Equipe. “It’s tough when you have a goalkeeper at such a high level. It pushes you to never slacken off. I’m strong in my head and both of us are decisive.

“If he wants to go, that would be his choice. It’s a shame that such a skilled goalkeeper must stay on the bench. When I look at his level, I’m happy for the season I’ve accomplished.”

Arsenal and Manchester United have been heavily linked with the Czech Republic goalkeeper.
