Inter Milan hitman Mauro Icardi believes that time will prove he was right to snub a move to the Premier League in favour of staying at San Siro.

The Argentine, 22, drew a line under speculation involving a move to Chelsea and Manchester United this week by signing a contract extension until 2019.

However, Icardi feels that he can still enjoy a trophy-laden career, suggesting that Inter has more than enough talent to return to “winning ways” after an eighth-placed finish last season.

“It’s been a great week and I’m pleased to have extended my contract. It’s a fantastic thing for me and for Inter,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’m confident the club will do everything it can to build a great team and get back to winning ways.

“We’re a young squad and I’m sure players will come in that will help us to improve. San Siro is one of the best stadiums in the world and when it’s full it’s even more beautiful.

“Playing in front of our fans in a Nerazzurri Meazza is a wonderful thing.”

Icardi netted 23 times in all competitions last season.
