If you thought that Steve McClaren’s most embarrassing moment as FC Twente boss came when he gave an interview with a Dutch accent then you were wrong. Very wrong.
This is because Mr McKlaaren apparently SNUBBED the chance to sign Chelsea hitman Diego Costa back in 2009.
Ex-Dutch international Jan Mulder has said that the now-Derby County boss was unimpressed by the Blues’ £32 million signing during a trial with the Eredivise side six years ago.
He told Studio Voetball: “I heard that Diego Costa had been tested in the Netherlands at FC Twente. I’ve heard through inside information.”
The 26-year-old striker has enjoyed a prolific first season in English football following his big-money summer switch from Atletico Madrid; netting 18 times in 22 Premier League appearances.
Which does McClaren regret more: the accent or declining the opportunity to sign a future legend? Let us know below.
