Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz has apologised to Chelsea fans for celebrating the goal that helped knock his former club out of the Champions League at Stamford Bridge tonight.

There was little evidence of sentiment for Luiz – who spent three and a half years in west London – as the Brazilian thundered an 86th-minute header past Thibaut Courtois to take the tie into extra time.

Eden Hazard rolled Chelsea into the lead from the penalty spot early on, before Thiago Silva’s header on 114 minutes levelled up the tie at 3-3 as Jose Mourinho’s side exited the competition on away goals.

“Tonight was good for me to score. I said I wouldn’t celebrate but my emotions I couldn’t control,” Luiz, who left Chelsea for £50 million in the summer, told Sky Sports.

“Thank you to Chelsea and sorry I celebrated because I was so emotional.”

Gary Cahill volleyed the hosts into a 1-0 lead after 80 minutes on a night where Chelsea struggled to capitalise on their numerical advantage after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was red-carded on the half-hour mark.
