What needs to happen at Chelsea in the new year

It’s the end of another year and for blues fans all over the world, thinking about the year that we have had may bring its own kind of mixed feelings.

The latter part of last season was somewhat anti-climactic in that towards the end of the season, many fans had begun to dare to dream of winning the league or at least being part of the prime showpiece of every season, the UEFA Champions League final. Well needless to say we all know how that turned out, but we at least get to jest at the otherwise always reliable Steven Gerrard gaffe at Anfield last season.  The off-season period also brought its own moments of promise with the way the club went about the transfer business of the summer. This season started with the team playing like a house on fire with our unbeaten run equaling a club record twenty-three games. So it’s been a bitter-sweet year and the present state of things inspires confidence. Three points clear at the top of the league, still in the Champions League, FA Cup and the Capital One Cup without any significant injuries which could derail our season as yet.

Much like Charles Dickens’ fictional character Oliver Twist though, I find myself thinking of how much I want more in the coming year.  For starters, the winter transfer window is one where despite Mourinho’s assertion to the contrary I would like us to strengthen the squad. I know what you are thinking. How can we possibly do that?

The team looks so well stocked and well covered in almost every area. I mean how many teams can have a goalkeeper of Petr Cech’s calibre as second-choice or have a La Liga champion and Champions League finalist like Felipe Luis as back up at left back. But like I said, I am pulling an Oliver to wish that we could get someone in to play on the right wing/right attacking midfield position. Yes we have got Willian, Schurrle and Salah in that position but I just feel that despite these options our right wing is not as dynamic and productive as the left is presently.

I also think that Salah may leave in January because he hardly ever even makes the bench these days. So the question then is who am I wishing for really? Well, I wouldn’t mind Marco Reus or perhaps Xherdan Shaqiri whom Bayern Munich apparently are keen to sell. Like I said, it’s all wishful thinking since the boss has said “no one is leaving or coming in January” but then a fan can hope right?
