Matic

Things seem to have gone cold between Chelsea and Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin but Jose Mourinho could be set to bring former Blues Nemanja Matic back to Stamford Bridge.

According to reports in Portugal from O Jogo, the Benfica midfielder will be available but not before their big match against Porto this Sunday and if the Blues’ interest is genuine then I’d argue that the Serbian would be the preferred option over Guarin to bolster Chelsea’s midfield.

The report claims that Ramires has urged his manager to bring Matic, who was used as part of the deal to sign David Luiz, back to West London.

As a rumour it seems a little lazy but considering Benfica’s current financial problems and their failure to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League makes it a little more believable, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see on this one as there definitely won’t be any developments ahead of their top of the table clash with Porto.

Aside from Matic and Guarin, Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is emerging as another option as he is yet to sign a new contract at the Bernabeu and will be free to leave in the summer. Mourinho’s relationship with the likes of Alonso did not seem to suffer despite the fallout between the Portuguese manager, some of his players and the Spanish media during his time at the club so could represent a realistic option – especially if Real wish to recoup some money rather than lose him for nothing in six months.

If Chelsea are to bring in new recruits this month then departures are inevitable, with the likes of Michael Essien, Kevin De Bruyne, Ryan Bertrand and Demba Ba the likeliest of the bunch to be moved on.
