Luiz

There has been a lot of speculation over the future of David Luiz over the past month or so and reports in Spain suggest that the unhappy Brazilian has requested a January move.

The 26-year-old was a target of Barcelona over the summer transfer window and it is claimed that there is a high possibility that the Catalan club will try to sign him again in January, whilst we hear that Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich are also interested.

Spanish newspaper AS claim that Barcelona will test Chelsea’s resolve over the €50 million-rated defender and see whether or not the Premier League club are willing to let him go as soon as January but it is fairly typical of the La Liga giants to try unsettle players through the media so this has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

It is true that Luiz had been called out by Jose Mourinho over some defensive gaffes already this season and he was dropped from the starting line-up but he has been carrying a knee injury in recent weeks which has made it impossible to win his place back. There is no certainty that the door is closed for him and Mourinho has recently admitted that he needs to rotate his squad better in order to keep them fresh.

Luiz is seen as a potential and long-term replacement for Carles Puyol, who has struggled with injury over several months and his comeback hasn’t been as strong as expected so Barcelona definitely need a new defender and Chelsea may well be happy to accept a large sum in order to purchase a new one of their own, but perhaps January is too soon for such a deal to happen with the complication over cup-tied players in the Champions League.

Do you think David Luiz could be on his way out of Chelsea this winter?
