Blaise-Matuidi-PSG-2012_2875316

Chelsea are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi but will face competition from Barcelona and Manchester City for the player’s signature.

The 26-year-old is out of contract next summer and is yet to agree an extension with the Parisian club which is why many of Europe’s big names believe they could lure Matuidi away and add steel to their midfield.

It’s certainly a position in which Chelsea could do with strengthening much like their forwards so it was odd that the club didn’t significantly improve on either area and instead decided to add more depth in positions that were already strong.

Frank Lampard and Ramires have started the most games as a midfield pairing but the former no longer has the legs for the role and you’re losing something from the latter if you’re asking him to sit back instead of playing his usual box-to-box role.

I’m not sure whether or not Matuidi would be the answer but something definitely needs to be done there and would even argue that we’ve missed a quality commanding presence in the midfield ever since Michael Ballack left Stamford Bridge for his former club Bayer Leverkusen. The German was a big part of Carlo Ancelotti’s double winning campaign and even sacrificed many aspects of his own game to allow Lampard to roam free and concentrate on finding the net without having to worry too much about his defensive responsibilities.

It may well be the case that PSG will opt to sell Matuidi if it comes to a point in which they know that he won’t sign a deal so Chelsea may have to act quickly if this is the midfielder that they want.

Do you think the Frenchman would be a valuable addition to the Chelsea squad? Have your say in the comments section below
