In recent seasons Chelsea have happily collected a number of attacking midfielders and currently possess more than they have room for in the squad, but their appetite for them remains unsatisfied as the London club are reportedly in for highly-rated Schalke prospect Max Meyer.

Derwesten.de claim that the Bundesliga club, who are hoping to push through a new deal for the player, have been put on alert after learning that the Blues are interested in acquiring the player for around €15 million but no official approach has been made as things stand.

Meyer is an excellent prospect and some believe that he’ll eventually be better than his team-mate Julian Draxler but despite this, it’s difficult to understand why Jose Mourinho would spend his time chasing more attacking midfielders when there are clear deficiencies in central midfield, our forwards aren’t scoring enough and a few minor shortcomings elsewhere in the side.

The one area in which Chelsea aren’t weak is in the playmaking/winger positions and although he’s hugely promising, the 18-year-old probably isn’t going to displace any of the current stars but if the rumours were true and Mourinho really really isn’t keen on Juan Mata and wants to replace a few squad members for players of his own choosing.

On the other hand, it’s rumours and we see different ones in relation to Chelsea every day, only this one has popped up a few times in recent weeks and the transfer activity has been a little unpredictable over the last couple of windows.

Meyer was included in Schalke’s Champions League squad following the departure of Lewis Holtby to Tottenham and the injuries of a number of other players. He’s making the most of his opportunities playing in nine league games (4 starts) for Schalke so far this season and has scored three, assisted one, and also opened his goal scoring account in the German Cup.
