Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic has hinted at a potential return to Stamford Bridge after saying that he would like to work with someone like Jose Mourinho and prove he can cut it in the Premier League.
The Serbian parted company with Chelsea when he was used in the deal that brought David Luiz to West London from Lisbon in 2011 and was linked with both the Blues and Manchester United over the summer.
Matic, 25, has established himself as a regular in the Benfica side since the switch and has been one of the better performers in the Portuguese league over the past few seasons. Although the press have naturally jumped all over his comments, he does say that he’s happy in Portugal but won’t rule out a return.
TMW quoted Matic:
“To be honest I would like to stay for another year in Lisbon.
“But surely if someone like Mourinho wanted to bring me back to London, it would be a chance to prove that I can play in the Premier League.”
He plays in a position that we ought to strengthen as Ramires has been the only consistent central midfielder that occupies the pivot role so far this season and I’d certainly welcome Matic back as I was a fan of his prior to his departure, and am pleased that he’s done so well at Benfica, but I don’t see this one going anywhere soon as he’ll likely cost big money now and Mourinho may believe he has more pressing concerns in January or next summer, like the need for a forward.
