Reports say Mourinho wants another forward but it doesn’t seem likely

After signing Willian and Samuel Eto’o most fans believed that Chelsea’s summer spending has now come to an end and it probably has, but Jose Mourinho is reportedly trying to convince Roman Abramovich to sign a big name forward.

According to the Daily Mail Mourinho is underwhelmed by what he’s seen so far from Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku, and even at 32 it wouldn’t be a surprise if Eto’o is made first choice forward but he wants more.

We already know that a move for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is out of the question and Mourinho has said this himself and the report claims that he wants to approach Real Madrid for Karim Benzema, but I wouldn’t consider him an upgrade, and Robert Lewandowski, who will move to Bayern Munich at the end of the season as confirmed by his manager Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

It isn’t as if there’s a plethora of options out there. Jackson Martinez was mooted as an option at one point but his release clause already stands at £35m whilst there’s rumours that a new contract will significantly up that figure. Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Gomez have already moved to Serie A, who else is there?

A lot would have to happen if Chelsea were to sign an ‘A-list’ forward before the close of the transfer window as well. It seems Demba Ba has plenty of loan offers on the table & will just take his pick but Torres would have to make way for us to sign another forward. Torres has been a failure and will never live up to his price-tag but it’s clear the problems are in his head and he has started the season well, so I don’t think we’re desperate for another forward.

Unless there’s some elaborate plot which sees Torres move back to his former club Liverpool in some sort of exchange deal for Luis Suarez, who we were linked with before we bid for Rooney, then I don’t see any more forwards coming in and I don’t think it is very likely. I do think Torres may well make his way back to Anfield one day though, possibly to soften the blow when Suarez does eventually leave the club.
