Chelsea’s summer transfer activity reviewed

It was a successful summer for Chelsea in terms of their transfer spending but many fans are arguing already that the most important signing of the summer was Jose Mourinho.

There’s no doubt that the return of the Special One will help the Blues to challenge for the Premier League title once again but we’ve also brought in a number of handy players.

The most extravagant signing of the summer was Willian, who can be inconsistent but is wonderful to watch when he’s on form and it’s always nice to deny your London rivals such a talent as he was widely tipped to go to Spurs before the Blues swooped in. His Anzhi Makhachkala team-mate Samuel Eto’o followed him to Stamford Bridge and although he’s 32, he’s scored goals wherever he has been throughout his career and could prove to be a real bargain on a free transfer.

Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel arrived from Bayer Leverkusen and Vitesse Arnhem respectively. Schurrle is a player that I had doubts over initially but the early signs are good and he’s been better than I expected him to be thus far. Van Ginkel is definitely one for the future but I’d like to see him given more opportunities as the Frank Lampard/Ramires pairing has looked stale since the Aston Villa game.

Having Kevin De Bruyne back from Werder Bremen is also a boost and has started two out of the four games for us so far. He deserved a chance after his impressive form in the Bundesliga last season and I hope Mourinho continues to give the Belgian chances when Juan Mata is back to full fitness and Willian is in the mix.

If there’s a downside it’s that Romelu Lukaku won’t be given the opportunity to compete with Fernando Torres or Eto’o for a spot up front this season, but he’ll play regularly for Everton and hopefully he can replicate or improve what he did for West Brom during the last campaign.
