Chelsea football club have confirmed that Samuel Eto’o has become the club’s second summer signing from Anzhi Makhachkala following Willian in the door at Stamford Bridge.
Reports earlier on today suggested that Eto’o will be confirmed as a Blue by Friday afternoon after the player was pictured at St Pancras last night.
The 32-year-old has signed a one-year deal to join the club and reunite with his former manager Jose Mourinho, who was a factor in his decision, and says that he cannot wait to get on the pitch.
Eto’o said:
“I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible.
“It wasn’t a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.”
Mourinho often builds strong bonds with his players and is enjoying working with the likes of Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien again, so in Eto’o he is bringing in another player that he can trust. The duo won the treble with Inter Milan in 2010 and it was back-to-back trebles for Eto’o, who has won three Champions League finals, scoring in two.
The Cameroon forward has been prolific throughout his career at Mallorca, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Anzhi Makhachkala. In Russia he’s average a goal in every two games and is versatile enough to play forward, wing or even at number 10. His versatility could come in handy during situations in which we may need more than one forward on the pitch when chasing a game as he may be able to compliment either Fernando Torres or Romelu Lukaku, who are better known as loan forwards.
Eto’o is on a £7 million contract according to reports but others have said it’s less. He could have earned bigger money elsewhere but is taking a cut to join Chelsea and remains a big name. He’s a bargain considering the figures.
