Striker issues come and get me plea to former boss
As a follow-up to rumours earlier about the possibility of Jose Mourinho recruiting one of his former players in Samuel Eto’o from Anzhi Makhachkala the forward has issued what could be interpreted as a ‘come and get me’ plea.
The 32-year-old seems keen to leave Russia, where he has been since 2011, and Anzhi wouldn’t mind clearing the world’s best-paid player’s wage off the books as they’re reportedly suffering financial problems.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for the player along with Rafael Benitez’s Napoli and Eto’o’s former club Inter Milan. Mourinho had worked with the player at Inter and won the Champions League together, so he’d jump at the chance to work with him again,
He said:
“There is only one Jose Mourinho. I have played under a lot of great coaches – but there is no other character in the game like Jose.
“He is one of the best coaches in the world – and we had a lot of success together at Inter Milan. I would like to have the chance to play under him again – because it is never boring when Jose is around.
“Of course Chelsea are a great team – and when we have all the offers on the table then I will discuss with my agent and see what my next step is.”
It seems as though he’s really keen on Mourinho and Chelsea as he’s putting himself in the shop window but I’m not entirely sure if the Blues would be keen on him.
A few papers suggest that Eto’o represents a back-up option should the bid to sign Wayne Rooney fail, but I don’t really see him as a Rooney alternative and with Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku and Demba Ba at the club we’re not overly desperate for a forward in my opinion.
Eto’o has enjoyed a fantastic career in football and would have been a great signing several years ago, not now. For starters he’d have to take a significant cut in pay and even then he’d probably still pick up over £100k-a-week, would he even be a guaranteed starter for that money?
I think Rooney will be the only target for the remainder of the transfer window.
