Newcastle United are interested in bringing Chelsea forward Demba Ba back to St James’ Park on-loan before the close of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old has only been with the Stamford Bridge club since January after the Blues activated his release clause and has scored six goals in his 23 appearances but is expected to be the forward that makes way for a new arrival.

Ba always looked like a short term option from the moment the Blues signed him as Fernando Torres was the only recognised centre-forward at the club through much of last season after Daniel Sturridge fell out with the club before he left for Liverpool. It’s difficult to see any sort of future for Ba at Chelsea at the moment and due to fitness reasons it may be difficult to move him on permanently, so a loan is the next best thing.

He did start Chelsea’s second league fixture against Aston Villa, Torres started against Hull City, but the fact that both of them were omitted from the first XI against Manchester United at Old Trafford for Andre Schurrle, better known as a left-winger, is a fairly clear indication that Jose Mourinho isn’t entirely happy with his striking options and is keen to boost them.

During a press conference last week Mourinho said that if/when the new arrivals come in there will be departures, but loans and not sales. As Moses is expected to may way for Willian it’s thought that Ba will be doing the same for the new forward, whoever that may be.

A move back to the Toon will probably do Ba good as that’s where he has fit in best during his time in the Premier League, scoring 29 goals for Alan Pardew’s side in 58 appearances. The only question now is which forward will Mourinho opt for now that Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is no longer an option?
