As transfer deadline day draws to a close there is always the potential for crazy last minute deals and reports suggest that Fernando Torres could make a shock return to Anfield.

The Spaniard make a record £50 million transfer to Stamford Bridge back in January 2011 from Liverpool and has picked up a Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup medal since but has never really fitted in at the club.

There are rumours that Jose Mourinho doesn’t really rate Torres as he’s only started one of Chelsea’s three Premier League fixtures and he recently said that he was not worth his transfer fee, but ‘twenty and a half’ and many believe that this puts fresh doubt on his future at the West London club.

Last season was Torres’ best for Chelsea with 22 goals in all competitions but it took 64 games to reach that total and he only managed eight in 36 league matches, which is nowhere near good enough when you’re leading the line for a top club like Chelsea. In his first six months at the club he only managed one goal and 11 in his first full season.

The 29-year-old has been a divisive figure amongst the Chelsea support as there are those that seem to make up any excuse to defend the player whilst others will go out of their way to blame him for anything possible. He probably hasn’t been quite as bad as made out as he has put effort in and can link-up with the attacking midfielders fairly well, but due to the fee, lucrative wage and the fact he hasn’t lived up to his expectations he can only be described as a failure.

From Chelsea’s point of view it’s worth taking a huge hit on the player as he will cost around £30 million in wages should he see out his current deal at Stamford Bridge. I’d also wager that he’s long been on the market but due to his wage it has been nearly impossible to find a club for him, could that now change?

If he doesn’t leave this season then Luis Suarez will be moving on in January or next summer so Liverpool will need to replace their main forward. They already have Daniel Sturridge who has enjoyed a great start to life at the club and they may opt to sign a former favourite in Torres as they have failed to sign a number of targets over the course of the summer.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola claim that there are ongoing secret talks between the clubs whilst Arsenal are monitoring the situation. I wouldn’t put it past Mourinho to end Chelsea’s Torres nightmare and we’ve already been surprised on a number of occasions this summer so cannot rule anything out.

It’s probably your typical media hearsay but the fact that Ron Gourlay said we may sign one or two more players means there will be departures and there already has to be after the arrivals of Willian and Samuel Eto’o. That coupled with the fact that Mourinho won’t suffer fools gladly makes me wonder, if he really doesn’t want him there he’ll find a way to get rid.

Do you think there’s any chance that Torres could be leaving Chelsea this summer? – Have your say in the comments section below.
