Samuel Eto'o Anzhi

As Chelsea wait until after Monday’s trip to Old Trafford to test Manchester United’s resolve for Wayne Rooney before the close of the transfer window there has been talk of which players Jose Mourinho will opt for should that bid fail.

One of the more confusing rumours concerns former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward Samuel Eto’o. One minute he’s definitely leaving Anzhi Makhachkala and he’s buttering up Mourinho in the press, then his coach confirms he’s staying and now his agent Claudio Vigorelli says that a move to Chelsea remains a possibility.

Players have been leaving Anzhi left, right and centre this summer, and Chelsea have already made a coup with Willian, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Eto’o was one of Mourinho’s backup options.

The 32-year-old’s agent said:

“Chelsea have a clear club policy of not signing players over 30.

“I spoke to Jose, who was willing to give Samuel a one-year contract.”

But admitted that the deal is only possible if Chelsea fail to sign Rooney:

“Mourinho only has him in mind and is waiting for the situation with Manchester United to find a breakthrough.”

The potential deal for Eto’o, should he make the switch to Stamford Bridge, is worth £6 million. But a move for Rooney is still very much on the cards, especially if United make additions before the transfer window shuts, and Mourinho wouldn’t bother if he thought that there was no chance of signing him. It’s believed that Chelsea will come back with a £40 million offer for the England forward, if that fails then Eto’o or Jackson Martinez could be making their way to West London if recent reports are anything to go by.

You never know with Chelsea. They surprised us with Willian and are capable of doing so once again.

You’re suprised??! You guys need to separate “Fantasy football” from the real thing. What if this Rooney business is all a smokescreen to leverage CFCs real intentions. None of you pseudo journos or any of us supporters who don’t bother writing this “guessing game” crap have any idea of CFCs business intentions.
