Mourinho has already marked Luiz’s card as rumours persist

Jose Mourinho hasn’t had the chance to speak face-to-face or work with Brazilian defender David Luiz but there are already reports that he could be an early casualty under the new manager.

The Daily Express claim that Mourinho is concerned by the 26-year-old’s erratic style and believes he gives the ball away far too easily for a centre-back, so he’s warned Luiz that he will play his way otherwise he’s out. But is there a grain of truth here or do the media just not like Luiz very much?

Luiz is currently on international duty with Brazil and will compete at the Confederations Cup which will start on Saturday and finish at the end of the month, so he isn’t going to see the player until he joins up with the squad in Asia along with the other Chelsea stars that will get a little extra break after playing in an international tournament this summer.

It is true that he can be something of a liability defensively, lacks concentration and isn’t the most intelligent footballer I’ve seen, but he’s also extremely talented, is proud to pull on the club’s shirt and has the personality of a potential leader. I don’t think Mourinho has made his judgement on Luiz already and he says that everyone will get their chances, if he could just get Luiz to use the grey matter between his ears then I don’t see the pair having a problem.

Of course, like anything this is all subject to circumstance and should Chelsea receive a huge offer from one of the Spanish giants Luiz has been linked to then a sale may be sanctioned whether Mourinho likes him or not as he’d have funds to buy whatever defender he wants.

As it is, he’s a Chelsea player and I reckon he will remain so for at least the next season. I don’t think Mourinho would be so unfair as to judge him already as he has improved and could continue in the same vein with a little help.

Oscar will also be in action for Brazil during the Confederations Cup whilst Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta will feature for Spain and both John Obi Mikel and Kenneth Omeruo will be there with the Nigeria squad. It’s fairly safe to say that they’ll all be in Mourinho’s future plans with the exception of Torres, who will likely make way for Romelu Lukaku and a new forward.
