Defender ‘95% certain’ to be at Chelsea for next season

It has not taken long for Jose Mourinho to get straight to work at Chelsea and it appears as though he’s called round to the squad’s young stars as Romelu Lukaku has already said that he’s wanted at Stamford Bridge next season and the same may go for Kevin De Bruyne.

Another young player of interest to Mourinho is Kenneth Omeruo, according to MTN Football, and the player’s representatives said:

“It is now 95% certain that Kenneth will finally team up with Chelsea for the coming season. Mourinho has said he wants to work with Kenneth after watching him at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

“He watched him against Didier Drogba at the Nations Cup and he said he liked what he saw.

“He will therefore not be heading back to Dutch club ADO Den Haag, where he has spent the last one and half seasons on loan.”

It’s an interesting one if true. Omeruo was one of the rising stars during Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations victory during the winter and can play at either centre half or right-back, much in the same way as Branislav Ivanovic does but would this mean that one of our existing defenders would be making way?

Omeruo won’t automatically qualify for a work permit to play in England which could be the reason for the 5% doubt mentioned above as he has not played 75% of the games his country has featured in over the past two years, but he was integral to the recent cup success and is likely to remain in the international setup which will stand in his favour.

The 19-year-old has been on loan from Chelsea to Dutch Eredivisie side for ADO Den Haag and has an odd claim to fame as he’s the only player to score a goal, an own goal and be sent off in the same match versus VVV Venlo.
