Chelsea Welcome New Signing

German international Andre Schurrle officially completed his move to Chelsea earlier today by signing a five-year deal at the Stamford Bridge club.

The Blues have been in pursuit of the 22-year-old for around a year and the deal was on/off until it was revealed by the club that a fee had been agreed with Bayer Leverkusen for the attacker on June 13th.

Schurrle is just relieved that the saga has come to a conclusion and told the club’s official website:

“I’m very glad and it’s been a long time coming. The newspapers and media have all written different stories but I’m really happy it’s all over and that I’ve finally signed for the club. Hopefully I can go on to have many good years here now.

“I saw lots of Chelsea last season, I wanted to come here so I think I watched every single Chelsea game. They finished the season very strongly; finishing third was very important for the club, qualifying for the Champions League without having to go through the qualifiers, so the last month in particular was very good.”

He also outlined what he thought was his best position as he mostly operated on the left-wing for Bayer Leverkusen but played upfront for Mainz:

“In attack I can play in every position, but I think wide on the left is my best position because I can cut inside and score goals with my right foot, which I hope to be able to do here, but I am confident playing anywhere offensively.”

Schurrle became the first Chelsea signing of the summer and will wear the number 14 shirt. He says that he’s looking forward to working with Jose Mourinho as well as his new team mates. It will be interesting to see just where he fits in as his preferred spot is currently occupied by Eden Hazard, who isn’t anywhere near as effective on the right as he is on the left.

However, the Belgian is great in the number 10 spot that Juan Mata currently plays in and the Spaniard’s productivity doesn’t seem too hurt whenever he’s fulfilling different roles amongst the attacking trio. Personally, if Schurrle is in the team then I’d have Hazard in the middle and Mata on the right. Schurrle can’t play on the right himself because it would negate his strength of cutting on his stronger foot.

But what about Oscar? I haven’t forgotten about the Brazilian but I do think he’d be much better in central midfield in the long run. Oscar has a great range of passing, vision and is quick enough to get from box-to-box. He isn’t afraid of getting stuck in either and I believe he’s good enough to pick teams apart with his passing in midfield.

But we shall see what Mourinho has planned for his troops and wish our new signing all the best in the meantime.
