German international our best option if top targets are unavailable?
It wouldn’t be the first time that the Blues have been linked with the player as they tried to sign him back in 2011 but signed Fernando Torres instead. He’s also been mooted as a potential target more recently when it first became clear that Mourinho’s position at Real Madrid had become untenable.
Most reports generally suggest that the likes of Robert Lewandowski on his way to Bayern Munich, Napoli’s Edinson Cavani is swapping places with Eden Dzeko at Manchester City and Radamel Falcao will end up at nouveau riche AS Monaco after years of being linked with the likes of Chelsea, City and Real. If this is the case then Chelsea will have to look elsewhere when it comes to landing a top level striker.
Wayne Rooney has also been mooted as a potential target but I think he wants Chelsea more than they would want him as he wants out of Manchester United but not England. If it’s between Rooney and Gomez then the German is a clear winner for me.
Both players are 27-year-old (Gomez is around three months older) but both have represented very different attitudes, especially when out of favour. I don’t think Rooney his current employers very much respect at all and his career looks like it is hitting the skids anyway. The Three Lions forward doesn’t look after himself, smokes and the shape he’s in is absolutely unacceptable for a professional athlete on his wages – it would be Torres all over again, only worse as the United forward is the engineer of his own destruction.
Rooney has scored 12 goals in the league this season in his 27 appearances (5 as sub), and 16 in all 36 of his appearances. Whereas Gomez has played 21 (12 a sub) netting 11 league goals, and has 17 in 30 appearances. The Englishman does make far many more assists though.
Any time I have brought up the topic of Gomez it seems that the majority would be against his signing which I’ve never really understood when it comes to a player that has 111 in 172 games for his club and 25 during his 58 international matches for Germany. At his age he should be in the prime of his career and if we cannot land Cavani, Lewandowski or Falcao then I can’t think of many better options out there. The sort of goals he can offer could give us a similar edge that Manchester United enjoyed with Robin van Persie this season and Gomez has more years in him.
The Daily Mail report that he will go for around £25 million but I think Bayern know full well that they won’t be getting that and he’ll probably go for 20-25 in Euro.
All I ask is that any forward comes into the club actually has a medical to avoid the sort of situation we faced with Torres.
