Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso may be on the way out of the Spanish capital as his contract talks have stalled which has sparked rumours that Jose Mourinho may be keen on signing the Spaniard for Chelsea should he make the move to West London himself.
The Daily Express reported the story and have also suggested that the 31-year-old may also consider a return to former club Liverpool.
Alonso is thought to be one of Mourinho’s main allies at Real Madrid, a club at civil war, and this has caused friction between himself and those within the squad that want to see the back of the Special One, so will likely be interested in following his manager out of the club and will go relatively cheap as his contract will expire at the end of next season.
I’m not quite sure what to make of this rumour as this will cause complications in relation to Frank Lampard’s future if Mourinho really does decide the England internationals future. As well as Alonso having a grudge against Lamps, I don’t believe the club would be willing to allow Mourinho pay out two big wages for players who have seen better days.
Also, Alonso is a good player and is economic with the ball with his 82% pass completion rate. He is also fairly adept at taking set pieces and winning the ball in midfield, but I’m not sure he would bring anything new to the midfield and doesn’t strike me as the type of player we’re crying out for.
If he was a few years younger then I wouldn’t mind it but we could go out and buy someone in their mid-twenties who would probably command a lower wage than Alonso’s.
I know we’re being hit with all sorts of rumours left, right and centre at the moment, but what are your thoughts on this one? – Have your say in the comments section below
