Mourinho to persuade Chelsea to re-sign former player

MaticBenfica’s Nemanja Matic could make an unlikely return to Stamford Bridge if the rumours are to believed in relation to the potential return of Jose Mourinho, who wants the club to re-sign the midfielder.

The Serbian was signed by Chelsea back in 2009 for £1.5 million from Kovice on a four-year contract but was used in a part-exchange deal to sign David Luiz before he was even given a chance to make an impression at the West London club… he now has a €45 million buyout clause.

Matic, 24, has gone on to become on of the most important players in the Benfica squad and has been as impressive, if not more-so, than reported Chelsea target Joao Moutinho during the current campaign.

Many wondered if the Blues would live to regret letting the player go when they did and it seems as though those suspicions have reigned true as he’s the sort of combative midfielder that we are crying out for and, ironically, could prove to be the perfect foil to play alongside David Luiz if he’s future lies in midfield or even Ramires, both of whom are former Benfica players.

As Frank Lampard’s time at the club draws to an end we will likely be in the market for a new midfielder but many make the mistake that we will be looking for someone like Lampard to score goals from midfield. We won’t – there’s only one Lampard and he’s currently playing a different role to his natural position. We have essentially replaced his goals by adding attacking midfielders like Juan Mata and Eden Hazard to the line-up so we need a rock in the midfield to link the play with quick passing and to also help protect the back four, not a goal scorer.

I really can’t see a deal working out as the asking price is so high but if Manchester United make their interest known and strike a deal then perhaps Chelsea will make their own enquiries.

Matic has played in 36 games for Benfica this season scoring five goals and has picked up plenty of European experience as they’ve competed in both the Champions League and Europa League this season, and he’s set to play against us in the final of the latter.
