Amid the furore that is surrounding the news that Sir Alex Ferguson is to retire his post at Manchester United at the end of the season an unexpected transfer rumour haveĀ arisenĀ regarding one of his current players.
On Graham Hunter’s Twitter profile, the journalist tweeted:
It isn’t the first time that the England forward has been linked with the exit doors at Manchester United, it isn’t even the first time that Chelsea has been mooted as a potential destination but this time it is unlikely that Rooney is looking for a pay rise.
David Moyes is to be named at Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford in a matter of days and although it will be denied as an issue, the history between the Scot and Rooney does present a problem for the Premier League champions. Moyes famously sued Rooney back in 2007 over comments made by the 27-year-old in his autobiography.
There’s nothing like a good libel case to burn bridges and although that was a long time ago I doubt the two have spoken a lot since and don’t think things with be patched up between them.
Now, I’m not suggesting that there’s anything in this but Hunter doesn’t usually comment on what he’d regard as mere rumour and for those of you that don’t use Twitter, it’s just here for you to peruse and to make up your own minds.
Rooney has also been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and there has been stories suggesting that he’s told his team mates that he would like to leave for the Allianz Arena, but he doesn’t strike me as a Pep Guardiola-type player. Rooney has scored 16 goals and made 13 assists for United this season, and 197 goals in 400 appearances during his time as a United player so far.
However, hypothetically speaking, do you think Rooney is a realistic target for Chelsea, where would he fit in and do you think he’d prove to be a worthwhile signing? – I would love to know your thoughts, so have your say in the comments section below
