Jose Mourinho is set to snub a return to Chelsea this summer and stay at Real Madrid, according to reports in the Daily Mirror today, despite being so strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese manager has been tipped to leave the Santiago Bernabeu over the past few months with the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan rumoured to be interested in his services but Paul Smith of the Mirror believes that he has made a U-turn and will stay put.

Mourinho recently admitted that the speculation over his future has done neither him or Los Blancos any good and that he intends to sit down with Florentino Perez at the end of the campaign to mull things over, whilst Smith claims that sources close to Mourinho say that he’s happy in the Spanish capital and wants to see out his contract.

If this is true then it seems as though Mourinho will delay his return to England, back to the league he feels most at home in, which will leave many Chelsea supporters disappointed as they were excited by the prospect of a highly dramatic return.

However, there are others that were always slightly more cautious over the rumours, argue that you ‘should never go back’ and that he doesn’t exactly suit the plans of the club. Roman Abramovich has invested a lot of time and money in order to scout and produce some of Europe’s top young talent, all we need is a manager that will commit to the final step in their development and arguably it isn’t a skill that Mourinho has shown enough of.

There’s also Financial Fair Play hanging over the club’s head and we’re already making measures to meet the regulations, but the prospect of having to be a little frugal may not appeal to Mourinho at this time as Madrid has a much higher annual turnover.

But who would the club turn its attentions to in this case?

Quite possibly. Perhaps both he and Fergie protest too much, and Jose knows that Fergie will choose his successor.
