Chelsea Player Ratings (v Wigan)

677233

Chelsea kick-started their season with a 2-0 win over Wigan at the DW Stadium. It wasn’t the best performance but we’re a work in progress and still in need of a player or two before the end of the transfer window.

Chelsea Player Ratings:

Petr Cech: 6

Did not have much to do (thank god Victor Moses cannot cross to save his life) but made a good save in the second half. Gave possession away too many times for my liking with aimless kicks.

Branislav Ivanovic: 7.5

Ran a long way to score the opener and a fine finish it was too. A solid display for the most part, but did leave too much space behind him at times.

David Luiz: 7

A much much better performance than the one he gave in the Community Shield against Manchester City and showed good awareness by covering the space that Ivanovic left at times, as well as seeing to his own defence duties.

John Terry: 8

Bossed it at the back in a game when the fullbacks weren’t at their best defensively.

Ashley Cole: 6

Had a miserable time against Victor Moses at times in the first half. Not one of his better offerings.

John Obi Mikel: 6.5

Another player that was crap in the Community Shield but improved against Wigan. Had a better second half than first, had a few iffy moments but did his job, nothing spectacular.

Frank Lampard: 7

Scored a penalty and was involved in a few good moments. At times he didn’t get the ball to the attacking players quickly enough, in my opinion.

Ryan Bertrand: 7

Delighted to see him get another opportunity in the first team and he covered well in defence whilst showing good pace going forward. Almost helped Fernando Torres earn himself a goal and set up Lampard on the edge of the box, but the midfielder dallied too long on the ball.

Eden Hazard: 8.5

Showed why he’s best in the number 10 position and was the biggest positive to take from the game bar the three points. Great pace and skill, demonstrated by his exquisite turn before he put Ivanovic through on goal in the opening minutes.

Juan Mata: 6.5

A fine player that is blatantly tired and needs to be rested.

Fernando Torres: 7

During the first half I started to believe that ‘Torres’ is Spanish for offside. Had a better second half and worked hard, still doubt he will score as many goals as we need him to this season. Will keep my fingers crossed though.

Subs:

Oscar: 7

Showed a nice turn of pace when he made a move down the right. He looked dangerous and made some great passes, although he seemed to mess up the easier ones at times. Can’t wait to see more from him.
