Chelsea kick-started their season with a 2-0 win over Wigan at the DW Stadium. It wasn’t the best performance but we’re a work in progress and still in need of a player or two before the end of the transfer window.

Chelsea Player Ratings:

Petr Cech: 6

Did not have much to do (thank god Victor Moses cannot cross to save his life) but made a good save in the second half. Gave possession away too many times for my liking with aimless kicks.

Branislav Ivanovic: 7.5

Ran a long way to score the opener and a fine finish it was too. A solid display for the most part, but did leave too much space behind him at times.

David Luiz: 7

A much much better performance than the one he gave in the Community Shield against Manchester City and showed good awareness by covering the space that Ivanovic left at times, as well as seeing to his own defence duties.

John Terry: 8

Bossed it at the back in a game when the fullbacks weren’t at their best defensively.

Ashley Cole: 6

Had a miserable time against Victor Moses at times in the first half. Not one of his better offerings.

John Obi Mikel: 6.5

Another player that was crap in the Community Shield but improved against Wigan. Had a better second half than first, had a few iffy moments but did his job, nothing spectacular.

Frank Lampard: 7

Scored a penalty and was involved in a few good moments. At times he didn’t get the ball to the attacking players quickly enough, in my opinion.

Ryan Bertrand: 7

Delighted to see him get another opportunity in the first team and he covered well in defence whilst showing good pace going forward. Almost helped Fernando Torres earn himself a goal and set up Lampard on the edge of the box, but the midfielder dallied too long on the ball.

Eden Hazard: 8.5

Showed why he’s best in the number 10 position and was the biggest positive to take from the game bar the three points. Great pace and skill, demonstrated by his exquisite turn before he put Ivanovic through on goal in the opening minutes.

Juan Mata: 6.5

A fine player that is blatantly tired and needs to be rested.

Fernando Torres: 7

During the first half I started to believe that ‘Torres’ is Spanish for offside. Had a better second half and worked hard, still doubt he will score as many goals as we need him to this season. Will keep my fingers crossed though.

Subs:

Oscar: 7

Showed a nice turn of pace when he made a move down the right. He looked dangerous and made some great passes, although he seemed to mess up the easier ones at times. Can’t wait to see more from him.

Ivanovic had a shocker aside from the goal. He was absolutely torn apart by both Wigan wingers. Moses made a fool out of him the entire second half. Mikel was much better than ivanovic and deserves higher. Hazard’s performance is being quite exaggerated. He had two good moments, and lost the ball far too often. Mata was pretty awful

      Dear TB CFC!
Please try not to be too negative if you are really True Blue.

He’s just giving his honest opinion and makes fair points. Everyone has different views and we should all respect them…unless someone was being outright ridiculous.

Yes my friend but them too moments cemented the result and Chelsea took thier foot off the gas and said ok now show us what you’ve got and still created opurtunities themselves, I think Torres deserves more credit he worked hard also had flashes of brilliance was unlucky not too score, was immense too even get it away like that, and should have had a penalty I dont expect him too score every week I expect him too help the team and to be the top goalscorer which I think he’ll do both. We will get a couple more players and we will have without doubt the strongest squad I think it’s thier already really but with a couple more signings there will be two players for Each position and the five man midfield is so interchangeable Lampard Essien Mikel Romeu merieles Oscar hazard mata Marin Ramires and possibly Moses united just have an abundance of good strikers and a few other top class players city is the same but the whole first team is pretty strong but I think thier bench is pretty average which you know Is why Mancini is upset right. And also just too throw it out thier does anyone know why chicarito wasn’t even on the bench, maybe a little Chelsea deal happening me hopes but I don’t know if hes injured or what?

I have to agree with TB FC, he doesn’t have to praise every person if he doesn’t think they deserved it. Everyone has their standard for their team, Hazard made the two important plays but aside he wasn’t much effective, apart from him moving things quicker in midfield, lost it too many times. Looks promising though. Mata does need a rest, I like Mikel keeping things simple, we don’t need him to attack honestly, Lamps, Mata etc have to step their game up a little more. It will happen, and Torres will score. Just wait!!

My comment will go to Petr Cech, thank God some of you have started noticing his weak points,he seems to be always in a panic situation kicking the ball directly to the opponent, for the opponent to start fresh attack from the back even when he had clear opportunities to start attack, by laying the ball to his defender/midfielder this happened thousands of times during last season, I hope he does better this season on that area!

  6. jeff says:

Why do we always over rate Lampard? No one seems to notice how easily he gives possesions away or how often he exposes our defence with his seldish & ambitious presence ??I? opponents box seeking for goals. This explains the pressure on Mikel. Oscar will definitely be a better option or pairin jus a little ahead of Mikel.

    • Anthony Williams says:

Fair enough. He’s definitely not initiating attacks well enough, which is what he’s supposed to be doing.

Lampard, in his pomp, passed sideways and made a run towards goal. This worked well and he scored a lot of goals but he’s not playing this role any longer. Played much better towards the end of last season, so he can do it.

Come on blues! This is just the begining, we can only get better…
