Uruguayan forward on the market?
Sport Mediaset reported that De Laurentiis has assigned an unnamed Italian agent to negotiate a deal with a Premier League club in order to cash in on Cavani, despite publicly refusing to entertain the idea of selling the Uruguayan this summer.
Cavani was dreadful during Uruguay’s ill-fated Olympic campaign in London, but he’s enjoyed a couple of incredible seasons in Serie A by scoring 66 goals in the past two campaigns, which is why Sport Mediaset have linked him with a move to Chelsea as they believe Roman Abramovich wants to supply Roberto Di Matteo with a top class forward to challenge Fernando Torres for a place in the starting XI at Stamford Bridge.
Quite how they managed to find out this information is anyone’s guess and it does have an awful whiff of bullshit about it, but it’s still worth looking at Edinson Cavani as a potential target as Torres isn’t exactly reliable and we no longer have Didier Drogba to bail us out of a tricky spot, whilst Romelu Lukaku isn’t ready and the jury is out in relation to Daniel Sturridge playing as a centre-forward.
Despite having doubts over whether Torres can make it, we probably ought to give him a chance as we have invested a lot of money in him and it would seem as though he was granted some assurances over the summer. So, in the short term, would it be best to put faith in someone we already have to play backup or go for a more modest purchase?
If the Spaniard isn’t firing the goals in on a regular basis by January then I certainly feel as though we will aim for a forward like Cavani. But if/when that time comes, I would prefer to see us make the move for Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao, a player that I thought we should have signed this time last year.
