Anyway, back on point, this is relevant to Chelsea for an entirely different reason altogether in terms of his severance deal with us. Sacking managers has cost a fortune for Roman Abramovich but instead of paying Villas-Boas a lump sum when he was dismissed in March, we continued to pay his wages which was about £100k-a-week according to reports.
Now, this is a lot of money to be paying someone for taking trips to Brazil/play golf/whatever he’s been up to, but once he has accepted the job at Tottenham he will come off Chelsea’s payroll and miss out on the remainder of his contract. In total this will save Chelsea just under £11 million, as reported in The Sun, and represents a far more sensible policy than we have gone with in the past.
Hopefully our current manager Roberto Di Matteo won’t see a similar fate though and I hope he receives some backing from the board if he decided to make big changes at the club, which is what they wanted Villas-Boas to do but the job proved difficult, as he lost the attention of the old guard and the replacements were inadequate. There’s also going to be the figure of Pep Guardiola looming over Di Matteo all season and the press will be quick to link his name to Chelsea if there’s a problem, stumble or blip.
But there’s every reason for optimism as we’ve signed a couple of talented young players and it seems like there will be a few new faces arriving this summer. Cannot wait for the new season to begin.
