The right fullback position has been something of a problem one for Chelsea and we’ll likely have to bring one in this summer, especially as Jose Bosingwa has left and despite being solid defensively, Branislav Ivanovic doesn’t offer enough going forward in my opinion.
We had been linked with Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel but the trail seems to have gone cold on him as Benfica have opened talks with Ajax to discuss a transfer, according to reports in the Netherlands. However, it would seem as though most fans wouldn’t mind missing out on him as there are question marks over his defensive capabilities and he’s looked average during the European Championships for his country.
So it would seem as though we will be looking elsewhere and according to the Daily Mirror, we’re interested in French centre-back Mathieu Debuchy, who has been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle United but they’ve allegedly had a bid rejected and Chelsea could be set to move in to sign the player for as little as £6-8m.
I have not seen the 26-year-old play too many times but he has looked decent for France during the Euros and has some technical ability. Also, it couldn’t hurt bringing one of Eden Hazard’s former team-mates from Lille as they already know each other well.

I don’t know about Mathieu Debuchy looking ‘decent’ as you say in the Euro’s to me he has looked like the best RB from any country in the competition. He has pace, very good ball control, can tackle, excellent distribution and above all a first class footballing brain. Playing in a very suspect back line with the likes of Mexes and Remi in the centre, Debuchy has excelled. I cannot see Chelsea picking him up for £6 to £8m though. Besides Newcastle prior to the Euro’s both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are now reportedly interested in buying him. I think his eventual selling fee could be anywhere between £10 and £15m. Due to the fact that we are now CL title winners and the ‘Eden Hazard’ purchase, I’m positive the lad would prefer to come to Chelsea. He has personally recently stated he would prefer the EPL next although wouldn’t consider his future until after the Euro’s. I certainly hope the story is true as he is an excellent player and it would put to bed the nonsense some people go on about reference van der Weil who IS a very ordinary player and not in the same league as Mathieu Debuchy. KTBFFH
