Defender urges Modric to join Chelsea

Now that the Euros are drawing to a close and the transfer window is set to officially open, transfer speculation will be rife and we could see a return of the Luka Modric saga that dragged and eventually disappointed us last summer.

The Croatian was closely linked with a move to Stamford Bridge last summer and expressed his desire to join the west London club, but Spurs held firm and he remained a Spurs player. However, he’ll surely be leaving White Hart Lane after we ousted Tottenham from the Champions League by virtue of winning the competition and Harry Redknapp has lost his job.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic believes his club would be a perfect destination for Modric. He told Sportske Novosti:

“I don’t know much about it other than what I read in the media.

“I know there was interest in the transfer window before. Chelsea as a team have needed a player with these qualities. He would fit in quickly and strengthen the squad.

“He has been in England a long time and knows about the way football is played on the island and the mentality of the players. He has exceptional quality, and moving to a bigger club is necessary for him to take the next step in his career.

“I think at Chelsea he would adapt instantly and become a better player. He should come to Chelsea – it won’t go wrong!”

The midfielder has won many admirers during his time in the Premier League and performed fantastically during the European Championships for his country Croatia, so it’s no surprise that he has been linked with Chelsea and a number of other clubs.

But I don’t think Stamford Bridge will be his destination, it’s far more likely he’ll end up at Real Madrid or even Manchester United. We’ve signed Eden Hazard to play in our number 10 role, which will mean Juan Mata will move out to the left and we already have several midfielders including the likes of Frank Lampard, Ramires, Raul Meireles and Michael Essien to compete over the remaining midfield positions.

I could be wrong, but the Modric to Chelsea ship has sailed and I reckon Spurs will still be reluctant to sell him to us anyway. They would much rather move him abroad. Let’s just hope they receive less money than we were originally willing to offer.
