Heynckes: Give Di Matteo a three-year deal
Di Matteo is currently the interim manager at the club and there has been no end to speculation over who will fill the role on a permanent basis since Andre Villas-Boas received his marching orders in early March, but Heynckes sees no reason for delay and believes the Italian is the right man for the job.
“I congratulate Chelsea on their victory.
“If you wish me to say something about Roberto di Matteo it is that Chelsea should give him a three-year contract.”
The club were a mess this season with stories of player power, certain members of the team being well past their sell-by date and talks of in-fighting amongst the playing staff and management.
But then Di Matteo took the reigns following Villas-Boas’ dismissal and the rest is history. No-one gave us a chance to turn around a 3-1 deficit against Napoli to stay in the Champions League and we were written off against Barcelona and Bayern, but each time the Blues overcame the odds and let’s not forget our FA Cup victory.
The fans love Di Matteo, the players do and you could tell how pleased Roman Abramovich was yesterday when he held the big-eared trophy aloft last night, surely he will now offer the former Chelsea midfielder a full-time job as the manager at Stamford Bridge?
I wanted Di Matteo to be appointed manager regardless of last night’s result but the win should put it beyond any doubt. Pep Guardiola was Abramovich’s first choice according to reports and there was even talk of bringing Jose Mourinho back to Chelsea, but neither will be the manager at Chelsea next season. Would you rather the likes of Fabio Capello, Harry Redknapp, Laurent Blanc or Joachim Low get the job ahead of Robbie?
