Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is hoping that the upcoming cup games against Birmingham City and Napoli in the FA Cup and Champions League respectively.

The Blues have dropped to fifth place in the Premier League following their defeat to Everton at Goodison Park yesterday and Villas-Boas is reportedly under pressure from Roman Abramovich, who has frequented Cobham of late and probably hasn’t been too impressed with what he’s seen from the players of late.

Chelsea will play Birmingham on Saturday and Napoli on the 21st.

Villas-Boas said:

“There are two different competitions now ahead of us and two competitions where we want to show a different quality.

“We have one week to prepare for Birmingham and then Napoli.

“They are two competitions where we are in a very good position and we have to rebuild confidence.

“We are in the last 16 of the FA Cup and we hope to continue to progress. That shows the spirit and resilience in a different competition.”

Villas-Boas is a hard man to read at the moment as he seems so relaxed during this awful spell of form, like he knows his job is safe or has accepted what comes with a dismissal.

He’s definitely made mistakes with his team selection, substitutions and tactics but the lack of effort on the players part in some games is plain disrespectful. Many will argue that it is the manager’s job to motivate the players but we have seen this behaviour before. Under Luiz Felipe Scolari the players were completely unwilling to try any of his ideas and last season during Carlo Ancelotti’s reign the lack of effort during the ‘bad moment’ was embarrassing.

I’m always hopeful that our form will pick up and we’ll make it through the next round of the FA Cup in all likelihood but I’m not so confident about the Napoli game.
