Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has said that the club won’t be signing Shakhtar Donetsk Brazilian winger Willian, despite reports suggesting that the Blues have made an approach for the player.

The Portuguese manager admitted that he finds the 23-year-old ‘interesting’ as a prospect but Willian has played in the Champions League this season and Villas-Boas said that he doesn’t think we should be signing any cup-tied players.

Villas-Boas said:

“Willian is a very interesting player, but he is cup tied in the Champions League. I don’t think we should go for players who cannot be involved in all the competitions.

“We are not stressed regarding what we can do in this transfer window. If a good opportunity arises we could study it but, at the moment, we are very satisfied.”

Despite his insistence that he is satisfied with the squad, he ought to be worried considering some of our performances this season and we’ve rarely looked convincing even in the games we have won.

Also, I don’t think Champions League eligibility should be our main concern in our transfer policy as our priority has to be qualifying for next year’s competition. The fact that Arsenal and Liverpool have been woeful has been our saving grace so far, but we can’t rely on them to slip up and we shouldn’t give up on trying to climb as high as possible in the table.

Eden Hazard is another cup-tied player that we have been linked with this month and he’s a player that I would love to see at the club. Although he’d likely come at a high price, he would be worth more if he fulfils his potential over the next few years.
